When the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise set sail to peacefully protest the first ever oil drilling in the Arctic Ocean in October 2013, none of the people on board knew what was coming. Seized at gunpoint by Russian special forces, the crew were thrust into headlines all over the world, facing up to 15 years in prison and finding themselves at the center of a bitter international dispute.
With the eyes of the world upon them, Russia charged the crew, from 18 different countries, with piracy and hooliganism in the most ruthless response from a national government against an NGO in a quarter of a century. The crew, who became known as the ‘Arctic 30’, were cast in the same mold as political prisoners like Pussy Riot and Mikhail Khodorkovsky. Their imprisonment lasted for months of uncertainty whilst charges against them were negotiated. However, their resolve to try to stop oil drilling in the Arctic was never broken.
Complete with never-before-seen footage and behind-the-scenes access, the documentary ‘Black Ice’ tells the story of the Arctic 30 from the moment they set sail to protest at the controversial Prirazlomnaya oil platform, to their arrest, imprisonment… and what happened next.
We’re thrilled to be joined by long term Greenpeace staff member and activist Frank Hewetson; Frank was the lead logistics coordinator for the Arctic 30 and has worked tirelessly for Greenpeace since 1989, taking part in countless campaigns over the years. Frank was motivated to join the trip by his passion for protecting the Arctic from dangerous drilling for fossil fuels. When he’s not planning creative environmental protests Frank plays ping pong and gets intense pleasure from planning outdoor adventures with his family and their dog Pluto.
