Local waste company Britaniacrest wants to build a large incinerator to burn commercial waste in the old Wealden Brickworks, north of Horsham near the Sussex / Surrey border. And this at a time when experts warn there is already a looming excess of incineration capacity in the UK and Northern Europe generally, and when it's becoming widely acknowledged that waste incineration depresses recycling rates.
Less than 20 years ago the residents of nearby Capel in Surrey fought a fierce battle in council chambers and court rooms to see off a large household waste incinerator in a similar disused brickworks; at the same time plans to build an incinerator at the neighbouring Warnham Brickworks in West Sussex were also abandoned.
This public exhibition by Britaniacrest runs only from 4pm to 7pm on Friday 26th January and 10am to 1pm on Saturday 27th January. Requests from residents to put the exhibition in a town centre location with more notice and longer opening hours have been declined.
