For decades, hundreds of communities living in the shadow of Heathrow Airport have had to suffer the daily reality of roaring planes and lethal levels of air pollution. Now, with a third runway decision expected this autumn (causing the same climate impacts as the entire country of Kenya), a family-friendly mass bike ride is being organised between Chiswick and Heathrow to raise awareness and collectively say: enough is enough.
We will be gathering in Chiswick Common (nearest tube station: Turnham Green) from 10am on 1st October to hear speeches by local residents and campaigners before setting off along Chiswick High Road at 11, arriving at Hounslow Heath between 12 and 1pm. The journey will flow at a gentle pace and there will be mechanics on hand if any bike problems occur! Everyone is invited to Grow Heathrow afterwards for more music.
Accompanied by a float and music to keep the pedal power pumping, the atmosphere will be fun and carnivalesque. Feel free to bring along props to highlight the issues at play: think gas masks and ear muffs.
This event will be happening on the same day as a series of actions organised by the environmental network, Reclaim the Power, so there may be an opportunity to connect on the day for those that wish to!
See you there.
