On Monday, October 23, 2017, the Greenpeace Toronto Volunteer Local Group alongside supporters gathered outside a TD bank at Bay & Queen, in protest of TD’s funding of new tar sands pipelines, including Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain Expansion.
The protest was part of the “Divest the Globe” Global Days of Action led by Mazaska Talks, a coalition of Indigenous groups calling on banks all over the world to stop financing the Dakota Access Pipeline and new tar sands pipelines: Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain Expansion, TransCanada’s Keystone XL, and Enbridge’s Line 3. These pipelines all violate the rights of Indigenous communities who do not consent to the building of these pipelines across their territories. If built, Kinder Morgan’s pipeline would threaten clean water, endangered orca whales, and Canada’s iconic Jasper National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
From October 23rd to 25th, people around the world were organizing at banks in their communities.
Greenpeace Toronto Local Group volunteers are calling on TD bank to stop putting its money into pipelines. TD is financing all three new tar sands pipelines, despite promising customers that they can bank on its environmental promises.
