Local Group Highlights - August-November 2018

Hello! I am always so happy to share these amazing updates. Here's a snapshot of what taking action looks like.
Thank you to our incredibly diverse Greenpeace Local groups for their endless organizing capacity and efforts! We can't do it without you. Thank you for the inspiration, hope and courage.  
~Aspa


Victoria

  • As part of the global day of action, the group organized a RISE for Climate Rally on Sept 8th.

  • Donated $640 dollars to build the 5th Tiny House Warrior building at UVic using funds that were donated to the group for t-shirts.


Vancouver

  • As part of the RISE global day of action on Sept 8th, the group organized a “Protestors Gratitude Party & Fundraiser” to support lawsuits stemming from civil disobedience against KM pipeline.

  • Supported Greenpeace in the Plastic Polluters Community Cleanup and Brand Audit on September 15th

  • The group is planning a “Plastic Attack” in Vancouver for the end of November.

  • The group also started a new Greenpeace Greenspeakers subgroup and did their first school presentation in October. Another presentation is planned for December. The group is super enthusiastic about enviro-education!


Climate Justice Edmonton

  • As part of the global day of action, the group organized a RISE for Climate film screening and discussion of ‘Directly Affected’ with Council of Canadians and Keeps of the Athabasca on Sept 8th.

  • Their work continues on with People on the Path - look at their progress here!

  • They are planning an event on Human Rights Day in December in collab with other groups to bring together a wide range of activists, organizers, and artists from across Treaty 6 territory to share food, stories, dances, visual art, and spoken word and stand-up performances on the intersections of migrant and climate justice.


Kelowna

  • New group emerging to run a Greenpeace Greenpeakers Kelowna program.
     


Winnipeg

  • In October, the team in Winnipeg hosted their second Vermicompost Workshop + Bin Making Session alongside Green Action Center!

  • Coming up - the group is planning a winter holiday social media challenge to encourage people to reduce consumption and minimize plastic packaging! 

  • They are also very interested in starting a Greenpeace Greenspeakers Winnipeg program


Toronto

  • Supported Greenpeace in the Plastic Polluters Community Cleanup and Brand Audit on September 25th.  

  • Did a #BreakFreeFromPlastic outreach event at Nuit Blanche and spoke to hundreds of people face to face about the GPC  campaign.

  • Did a teambuilding and facilitation training with Aspa Tzaras and Laura Severinac as facilitators in October.

  • Currently running a #breakfreefromplastic fundraising challenge - first local group to use the peer-to-peer platform to fundraise for Greenpeace . They are more than 50% of the way to reaching their fundraising goal.

 


GTA Greenspeakers

  • Recently recruiting new presenters.

  • Very active in many schools across the GTA and high demand in Hamilton.  So far they have done 3 presentations since School started, and have another 3 more scheduled in November.

  • Planning Greenspeakers training in collab with Aspa Tzaras on November 20th and inviting all new and emerging Greenspeaker groups to attend from across Canada.


Ottawa

  • Some changes in the group - they are doing some visioning and teambuilding to establish next steps and the group’s direction.

  • The group had planned to do an event on Park(ing) Day in September to transform parking spots into public space for the day as a way to engage with the public and recruit new volunteers, however, they got stormed out as this was scheduled for the same day as when the Tornadoes hit Ottawa :( So glad everyone is safe. 
     


Victoria School of the Arts, Edmonton

  • School was out for the summer, but now they are back and in the process of redevelopment and training new members as some leaders are graduating this year.  They are continuing their school-wide recycling program, and want to do another community tree planting.  Likewise, they are very interested in planning a Greenpeace fundraiser for Earth Day next year! 
     


Halifax

  • Supported Greenpeace in the Plastic Polluters Community Cleanup and Brand-audit in September by organizing the event in Halifax in collaboration with Ecology Action Centre. The group is regrouping and thinking through what is next.


Montreal Local Group

  • The group was in the process of redevelopment as there were only 3 members left in the group in September. We did a push of recruitment and now there are around 30 members with about 20 who are more active!

  • Helped Isabelle with a die-in of 500 people during a rally in front of Radio-Canada before the electoral debate on September 13th.

 

  • Supported Greenpeace in the Plastic Polluters Community Cleanup and Brand-audit in Montreal on October 2nd.

 

  • GP stand on our plastics campaign at the Zero Waste festival on November 3-4th (They did amazing and got 782 new supporters to the top 5 polluters petition. Huge success!)

  • Helped with security and petition signatures for the boreal forest projection on November 3rd.

  • Top 5 plastic polluters education activities on November 11th & 17th. They spoke to hundreds of people face to face about the GPC plastics campaign.

 

  • The group is planning a “Top 5 plastic polluters stickering campaign” in supermarkets in Montreal and around for the end of November.


Greenspeakers Montreal

  • The group is in the process of redevelopment and did a presentation of the forest campaign in September in a primary school class. Another presentation is planned for December. The group is super enthusiastic to do more.


McGill Local Group

  • The group was in the process of redevelopment in September and is now up and running.

  • They organized a panel discussion “Looking Ahead: A New Era of Environmental Policy in Quebec” on October 31rst.

  • They are organizing a Zero waste week of activities in McGill from November 12th to 18th.


Sherbrooke Local Group

  • The group is in the process of redevelopment and the awesome LG leader organized a climate rally linked to “La Planète s’invite au Parlement” with a couple of hundreds of people on November 10th.

  • The group is planning another climate rally during COP24 on the day of the Climate Alarm call on December 8th


Viva la revolución!!
