We recognize that this action is taking place on traditional and unceded Algonquin territory.
On March 10, over 10,000 people marched to Burnaby Mountain where a traditional Coast Salish watch house (“Kwekwecnewtxw”) was built by Indigenous peoples, spiritual leaders, and youth. Since March 17, 173 people have been arrested at the gates of Kinder Morgan. For the first time in history, sitting MPs have been arrested.
On Friday, over 100 Ottawa-Centre constituents marched to MP and Environment and Climate Change Minister Catherine McKenna's office to deliver a water sample from Coast Salish territory to show her what she puts at risk by allowing the twinning of TransMountain. The #DefendTheWaterdemonstration in Ottawa was one of over fifty actions that happened across Canada that day. The action on Friday was to show our solidarity with ongoing #ProtectTheInlet action against Kinder Morgan's pipeline. Unfortunately, MP Catherine McKenna was unavailable to come and speak with us so we're heading back with a new demand.
Join us for bold action and continued escalation in solidarity with Coast Salish peoples to ask our MP and Minister of Environment and Climate Change to meet with the Coast Salish water defenders at the Watch House.
More info to come, including a list of speakers...
