Councillor Mike Layton has proposed a bold new motion asking that Toronto City Council explore putting a price tag on what climate change will cost the city, as well as the explore possible legal options for holding oil companies accountable for their fair share of these costs.
City Council has sent Layton’s motion to the Environment and Infrastructure Committee, which will be debated and voted on at their April 25 meeting. These committee meetings provide an opportunity for the public to speak on the very topics being discussed. Making a deputation is a very powerful civic tool, as it gives Torontonians the opportunity to speak personally when it matters most.
Keith Stewart (Greenpeace’s Energy Strategist) is running a workshop at the Greenpeace office on Wednesday, April 10th from 6:30-8:30 pm to support folks in doing deputations in support of Layton’s motion. All are welcome!

City Council Committees - More on making a deputation:
Each person who registers to speak, will have the opportunity to speak for 5 minutes and Committee Members will have the chance to ask questions following your presentation - the limit for the questions and answer period is 5 minutes per Member.
This is what you need to do to give a deputation at the April 25th Environment & Infrastructure Committee Meeting:
1. Register in advance by 4:30 pm the day before. Once the meeting agenda is made available online, a "Request to Speak" button will appear at the top of the page when reviewing each specific agenda item. If you click this button you can easily send your request to speak about the specific item you are reviewing via email. This online button will be removed by 4:30 p.m. the day before the meeting. Here's the link to register.
2. Attend THIS workshop/practice session with Keith! This is a chance to run through how to plan and prepare to give a deputation and to discuss what to include and what not to. We will also do some practising!
