BACKGROUND: The tuna industry is out of control and Walmart is subscribing to the detrimental practices that fuel the waste of marine life and fail on social accountability. Walmart is the largest retailer in the world, and is a major buyer and seller of seafood. While the company talks a big sustainability game, its seafood sourcing policies and practices are failing our oceans, seafood workers and its customers. Walmart’s Great Value canned tuna, which leaves a trail of destruction from sea to shelf is firmly on Greenpeace’s radar. Our message to Walmart is simple: Save oceans. Protect workers.
CAMPAIGN: This October, Greenpeace volunteers and people like you have helped to send over 400 letters to Walmart stores across the country. Those people asked Walmart management to take the steps necessary to ensure the canned tuna available on Walmart store shelves isn’t the result of ocean destruction and human rights abuses.
To date Walmart Canada has not responded to our collective call, and that means it’s time to take the next step! Over the next few months, we will be launching a series of actions demanding change in the tuna aisle.
